St Leonard's Bell Ringers

The St Leonard's bell ringers are a keen enthusiast group that has a practice night during the lighter /warmer evenings , Monday at 6.30 through until about 8. We managed to gain two new permanent ringers at our last recruitment and always open for any more interested to learn.

There are seven local ringers and three that we gain on the odd occasion.

The better sound is at least 5 ringers and whenever we get that five we ring on a Sunday.

We love ringing for weddings and have a few booked in for this year.

The Friends of St Leonard’s

The Friends of St Leonard’s is for everyone who cares for the beauty and traditions of this grade II listed building church building, whether or not they are resident in Turners Hill. Whilst many members of the regular church congregation have become members, the Friends was specifically set up by Anwyn Daniels to enable a much broader range of individuals and businesses to contribute and to have a say in how funds are spent. Many people who live in Turners Hill, work here or visit are concerned to see that we pass on our village church to future generations in the same good condition that we received it from our forebears.

Our heritage and its maintenance

Whilst a relatively recent church building, consecrated in 1895, successive generations have cared for the church, but there are no large endowments and the cost of maintenance must be met by raising funds locally. St Leonard’s has to be inspected every five years by a diocesan architect who recommends spending that he considers necessary and sets the priorities. The need for repairs may also arise due to the effects of unforeseen events, such as storm damage and other "weather events".

St Leonard's Walking Group

Walking Group from St Leonard’s Church Hall

We have a group of people who walk once a month, mainly around the public footpaths in
the Turners Hill and area. We sometimes travel further afield, especially in the summer
months or in the Winter when the public footpaths become too muddy or unsuitable for group
walking.
We have had up to 15 people walk (together with 4 dogs) but normally we get 6 – 10 people
and possibly 1 dog. Our walks vary in distance but are usually between 3 – 6 miles. An
email goes out from Barbara Podbury to advise of walk dates (mostly on a Friday) start
location, parking etc. Information on other St Leonard’s Church events are sometimes
included. If you would like to join this email list, please contact Barbara on
barbarapodbury@gmail.com.
We like to have coffee & homemade cake after the walk and this is often in the church hall or
could be at a local café or venue to be decided by the walk location.
We are a friendly group and welcome new walkers and well behaved dogs who can walk on
a lead as we are limited to country public footpaths where livestock or crops need to be
respected.
If you would like to become a Friend of St Leonard’s Church and hear more about us, please
let us know. There is a ‘Friends’ membership fee of £7.00 per annum per person or £12 per
family. Please see the Friends page on the website for event information.
